The Sin of the Golden Calf (Egel Hazahav): Broken Tablets at Sinai

The Sin of the Golden Calf (Egel Hazahav): Broken Tablets at Sinai

Exodus 32 to 34, six weeks after the Ten Commandments. The people grow restless when Moshe doesn't return, demand a god they can see, and Aharon makes a golden calf. Walk verse by verse: the calf and its festival, God's anger and Moshe's plea, the broken tablets at the foot of the mountain, Moshe returning up to plead again, the request to see God's glory, the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, and the second tablets brought down with Moshe's face shining. The Thirteen Attributes are recited every fast day and during Selichot.
