וַיִּקַּ֨ח מַקְל֜וֹ בְּיָד֗וֹ וַיִּבְחַר־ל֣וֹ חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה חַלֻּקֵֽי־אֲבָנִ֣ים ׀ מִן־הַנַּ֡חַל וַיָּ֣שֶׂם אֹ֠תָם בִּכְלִ֨י הָרֹעִ֧ים אֲשֶׁר־ל֛וֹ וּבַיַּלְק֖וּט וְקַלְּע֣וֹ בְיָד֑וֹ וַיִּגַּ֖שׁ אֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽי׃
Ia mengambil tongkatnya di tangannya, lalu memilih lima batu yang licin dari dasar sungai dan menaruhnya di dalam kantong gembala miliknya, yaitu di dalam tas bekalnya. Dengan umban di tangannya, ia maju mendekati orang Filistin itu.
