Wdowy, albo rozwódki, albo zniesławionej, albo nierządnicy, żadnej z tych nie pojmie; lecz tylko dziewicę z pośród współplemieńców swoich pojmie sobie za żonę.
Rashbam
לנפש לא יטמא בעמיו, a man belonging to the “nation” of priests must not defile himself by contact with a dead human being. The word בעמיו “of his people,” is used here in the same sense as in verse 14 later on where the Torah decrees that the only suitable marriage partner for a High Priest [if he was not married at the time of his appointment. Ed.] is בתולה מעמיו, “a virgin from his people.” If the Torah had written here לעמיו instead of בעמיו, the meaning would have been more restrictive, i.e. that the priest must only not defile himself by contact with a Jewish corpse. Similar constructions involving the expression לעמיו are found in Numbers 6,7 The expression לנפש allows leeway, as we know from the subsequent verse where it is permitted for the priest or even mandated that he defile himself on the corpses of his closest relatives.

English Explanation of Mishnah Sanhedrin
He can perform halitzah for another’s wife and others can perform halitzah for his wife or contract levirate marriage with his widow, but he cannot contract levirate marriage since he is forbidden to marry a widow. The High Priest is basically the same as any other person with regards to the laws of levirate marriage. If he should die without children, his wife must either marry his brother or his brother must perform halitzah for her. If his brother should die without children he must perform halitzah for his wife. He cannot, however, contract levirate marriage with her since he is in general prohibited from marrying a widow (Lev. 21:14).

A virgin who became pregnant, what is it regarding the High Priest: That is, she says that they would find her hymen [intact]. Or also (another explanation): The High Priest married her and he did not know that she was pregnant, but he found her hymen [intact]; and afterwards she is found to have been pregnant. What is the law [about] maintaining her [as his wife, in view of the Torah's command], "a virgin from his people shall he marry" (Leviticus 21:14)?
