For Satan had a case against Abraham for having brought as a sacrifice an animal instead of Isaac-an unlawful transaction, since it says, “he shall not alter it (an animal destined for sacrifice) nor change it” (Lev. 27, 10). His claim, therefore, was quite reasonable.

As to the question which might be asked, why then did God allow Job to suffer thus, the answer would be that, had he given Satan his due, the “unholy side” would have separated itself from the holy, and so allowed the latter to ascend undisturbed into the highest spheres; but since he did not do so, the Holy One let justice be executed on him.
