Ein Yaakov (Glick Edition)

(Fol. 17) Our Rabbis were taught (Ib. 11, 26) And there remained two men in the camp. According to some, it means that their names remained in the urn. For, at the time the Holy One, praised be He! said to Moses: Gather unto Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, Moses said [to himself]: "How shall I do it? Shall I appoint six of each tribe? Then there will be two more. Shall I take five of each? Then there will be ten less. Shall I appoint from two tribes." So he chose six from each, and each? Then I will bring jealousy among the tribes." So he chose six from each, and brought seventy-two ballots. On seventy he wrote Zaken (elder), and two he left blank. After he had mixed them all up and put all of them into the urn, he said to them: "Go, each, and take your ballot." To the one who drew the ballot on which "Elder" was written he said: "You are already sanctified by Heaven." But to those who drew the blanks he said: "Since Heaven did not select you, I cannot alter it." Similar was the following case (Ib. 3, 47) Thou shalt take five shekels a piece for the poll. Moses said to himself: "How shall I do it? If I should say to one, 'Give the shekels,' he may answer, 'The Levite has already redeemed me.'" Therefore he brought twenty-two thousand ballots and on each he wrote: "Levi;" and on two hundred and seventy-three he wrote "five shekels," mixed them, put them in the urn, and said to the people: "Draw your ballot." To the one who drew on which "Levi" was written, he said: "The Levite has redeemed you." And he who drew five shekels was told to pay the amount and go." R. Simon, however, said [Eldad and Medad] remained in the camp; for when the Holy One, praised be He! said to Moses: Gather unto Me seventy men of the Elders of Israel, they said: "We are not worthy of such a high appointment." And the Holy One, praised be He! said: "Because ye were modest, I will increase your grace." And what grace was increased to them? All the seventy had prophesied once, and ceased; but these two did not cease to prophesy. And what was their prophecy? They said: "Moses shall die, and Joshua shall bring Israel to his land." Aba Chanin, however, said in the name of R. Elazar: "They prophesied about the quail, saying, 'Come up, quail. Come up, quail." And R. Nachman said: "They prophesied about Gog and Magog, as it is said (Ezek. 38, 17) Then hath said the Lord Eternal: Art thou (not) he of whom I have spoken in ancient days through means of My servants, the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days (Shanim) years, that I would bring thee against them?" Do not read Shanim (years) but Shnayim (two). And who were the two who had prophesied at one period, with one and the same prophecy? Eldad and Medad.

Bamidbar Rabbah

“You shall take five shekels each by head count; in the sacred shekel you shall take, twenty gera is the shekel” (Numbers 3:47).
“You shall take five shekels each…” – the Holy One blessed be He said: You sold Rachel’s firstborn, that is, Joseph, for twenty silver pieces, which are five shekels; therefore, each and every one of you will redeem his firstborn son for five sela according to the Tyrian maneh.12In that system of currency, each shekel, or sela, is worth four dinars.
“You shall give the silver to Aaron and to his sons, the redemptions of those among them who remain” (Numbers 3:48)
“You shall give the silver to Aaron and to his sons, the redemptions of those among them who remain” – just as the Levites were given to Aaron and his sons, as it is written: “You shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are given to him from the children of Israel” (Numbers 3:9), so, the money of redemption that was in place of the Levites was given to him.
“Moses took the silver of the redemption from those who were over and above the number of redemptions of the Levites” (Numbers 3:49).
“Moses took the silver of the redemption…” – what did he do to them?13To the people. Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Neḥemya: Rabbi Yehuda says: This is what he did: He wrote Levi on each of twenty-two thousand notes and placed them in a receptacle. In addition, on each of two hundred and seventy-three notes, he wrote: Five sela, and placed them in the receptacle and mixed them. The father of a firstborn would extend his hand into the receptacle. If a note on which: Son of Levi, was written entered his hand, he would say to him: A son of Levi has already redeemed you. One into whose hand a note entered on which five sela was written, he would say to him: Give the five sela that you owe. All of them did so. Rabbi Neḥemya says: If so, he can deliberate with him and say to him: It is not for you to say to give five sela. Each of the notes upon which Levi was written was taken. If I place my hand, what will enter my hand if not notes of five sela? Who will say to me that had there been a note of Levi there that I would not have obtained it. Rather, this is what he did: He wrote Levi on each of twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three notes, and on two hundred and seventy-three: Five sela. They came and placed their hand. One into whose hand a note of five sela entered, if he came to say anything to him, Moses would respond to him: Had you merited it, would there not have been a note of Levi? Rather, you are obligated by Heaven. At that moment he would give it.

Midrash Tanchuma Buber

(Exod. 30:13:) A HALF SHEKEL. R. Judah and R. Nehemiah differ. R. Judah says: Because (in the matter of the calf) they sinned in the middle of the day, they would give the half shekel. But R. Nehemiah said: Because they sinned for six hours in the day, they would give the half shekel,22ySheq. 2:4 or 3 (46d); see Tanh., Exod. 9:10. See also below, Exod. 9:13. since it consists of six grammata.23The Greek word (gramma in the singular) denotes a small weight of 1/24 ounce. R. Judah bar Nehemiah said in the name of R. Johanan ben Zakkay: Because Israel transgressed (rt.: 'BR) the Ten Commandments, they would give ten gerahs.24Cf. Exod. 30:13 = Numb. 3:47: THE SHEKEL IS TWENTY GERAHS. Similarly Lev. 27:25; Numb. 18:16; Ezek. 45:12. R. Berekhyah said in the name of Resh Laqish: You sold Rachel's first-born for twenty <pieces of> silver (according to Gen. 37:28); therefore, in the case of every first-born that you shall have, his redemption shall be five shekels of silver, as stated (in Numb. 3:47): YOU SHALL TAKE FIVE <SHEKELS> EACH.
