For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: – This verse is an explanation of the preceding; for he says in the congregation of righteous men without explaining in what sense the congregation of the righteous after death is (to be understood); therefore he interprets and says that (the Lord) knoweth; and the meaning of knoweth is “looks upon and considers with a view to doing them good.” And so (in the passage) “What is man that Thou takest knowledge of him?” (Ps. 144:3); “Whom the Lord knew” (Deut. 34:10); “for I know his sorrows” (Exod. 3:7); “Thou hast known my soul in adversities” (Ps. 31:8); “I did know thee” (Hos. 13:5). In this way too (we understand) “there is no man that will recognise me” (Ps. 142:5); “blessed be he that did recognise thee” (Ruth. 2:19). He says that God who is exalted gathers the souls of the righteous to Himself, and knows them, and recognises them to do them good and satisfy them with His goodness and knowledge and care; for this is the greatest good and the best recompense, as it is said: “and the soul of my Lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the soul of the Lord thy God” (1 Sam, 25:29)

AND WHAT ARE WE, THAT YE MURMUR AGAINST US. Rabbi Abraham ibn Ezra explained it as meaning: “And what power to act is there in our hands? We have only carried out what we have been commanded.” But this is not so. Rather, the sense of the verse here is similar to: What is man, that Thou art mindful of him?356Psalms 8:5. Eternal, what is man that Thou takest knowledge of him?357Ibid., 144:3. For how little is he [man] to be accounted!358Isaiah 2:22. And this [verse here] is an expression of humility. “For what are we that you should attribute us with bringing you out from the land of Egypt? Behold we are nothing, and our work is vanity.359See ibid., 41:24. And your murmurings are not against us, but against the Eternal.360Verse 8. It is He Who has brought you out from the land of Egypt, not we.” And in the Mechilta we find.361Mechilta on the verse here. “[They said to them]: ‘Are we so distinguished that you arise and murmur against us?’”362This bears out Ramban’s interpretation that the expression, and what are we? is one of humility, as explained.

ידע לכתך, He repaired or improved that way wherever necessary. The word ידע is used here in the same sense as in Exodus 5,25 וידע אלוקים, where it meant that G’d took benevolent notice of the plight the Israelites were in and began to rectify their situation. Similar uses of the term are found in Exodus 33,12 where Moses is the beneficiary of such ידיע, and in Deuteronomy 34,10 where he is again described as the beneficiary of such a ידיע, intimate familiarity with G’d.
