И вот, я назначил с ним Охолиава, сына Ахисамаха, из колена Дана; и в сердцах всех мудрых Я вложил мудрость, чтобы они сделали все, что Я повелел тебе,

בצלאל בן אורי בן חור, “Betzalel, son of Uri, son of Chur;” the reason why the Torah mentions also the grandfather of Betzalel, whereas in the case of his assistant, Oholiov, it mentions only his father, (verse 6) is that Chur had died a martyr’s death in opposing the Israelites‘ dancing around the golden calf. The major function of the Tabernacle was to atone for that sin. This is why his name is mentioned here in connection with the Tabernacle.

with all your heart The “heart” denotes consciousness (and is here an allusion to the spirit of intelligence, corresponding to the first Divine Wheel [Ezekiel 1: 15]), as in “wise of heart” [Exodus 31: 6] and “acquires a heart” [Proverbs 15: 32].

To justify this interpretation further,5The verse, “More than others was Koheles wise,” means that Solomon achieved the deepest understanding of wisdom. the word “wisdom” [must] connote both knowledge and intellect, [for to receive meaningful instruction], one must also be at the proper level to absorb the precepts. This is the meaning of what is written in Daniel: “He gives wisdom to the intelligent,”6Dan. 2:21. See Marsha to tractate Berachos 55a. i.e., wisdom is imparted [by God] to one who possesses intelligence and not to one lacking this trait and is thus unable to conceptualize his knowledge.7See Ha’amek Davar, Deut. 1:13 and Ex. 31:6. Both “wisdom” and “intelligence” are derived from the word “hacham.” The alternate translation, “He gives wisdom to the wise,” is unsatisfactory because the verse would imply that one becomes wise prior to receiving wisdom. Solomon wrote that a prerequisite [for developing] this intelligence is to acquire knowledge and tradition, and afterwards to try to understand [the laws]. For thus did the sages of blessed memory caution, that “A person should first learn and [then attempt] to interpret,”8Shabbos 63a. the latter meaning to understand the rationale for the laws that one has learned.

למטה דן OF THE TRIBE OF DAN — This mention also of the parent and tribe of the woman teaches us that the wrong doer brings shame upon himself, shame upon his parent, shame upon his whole tribe. Similarly we find the name of the tribe Dan mentioned to express praise; (Exodus 31:6) “Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan”, where the details of Oholiab’s descent imply praise for him, praise for his father and praise for his tribe (Sifra, Emor, Section 14 4).
