וְרִדְּפָ֤ה אֶת־מְאַהֲבֶ֙יהָ֙ וְלֹֽא־תַשִּׂ֣יג אֹתָ֔ם וּבִקְשָׁ֖תַם וְלֹ֣א תִמְצָ֑א וְאָמְרָ֗ה אֵלְכָ֤ה וְאָשׁ֙וּבָה֙ אֶל־אִישִׁ֣י הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן כִּ֣י ט֥וֹב לִ֛י אָ֖ז מֵעָֽתָּה׃
И она побежит за своими любовниками, но она не настигнет их, и она будет искать их, но не найдет их; Тогда она скажет:'Я пойду и вернусь к моему первому мужу; Тогда мне было лучше, чем сейчас.'

Further said R. Johanan in the name of R. Jose : One chastisement in the heart of a man is better than many lashes ; as it is said, "And she shall run after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them, and she shall seek them, but shall not find them ; then shall she say [in her heart], I will go and return to my first husband ; for then was it better with me than now " (Hos. ii. 9). R. Simeon b. Lakish said : It is better than a hundred lashes ; as it is said, "A rebuke entereth deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred stripes into a fool" (Prov. xvii. 10).
