Walang bahaging buo sa aking laman dahil sa Iyong poot; walang kapayapaan sa aking mga buto dahil sa aking kasalanan.

"When there is a dispute between men, etc" (Deuteronomy 25:1) [we can understand this] According to musar, [this verse is intended] for a person who is not of balanced temperament, but sometimes this person's evil inclination overcomes them as if in a dispute, and there is no peace within himself, as King David said "there is no peace in my bones, etc" (Psalms 38:4) [then that person and their yetzer] "and they shall approach judgment" - meaning to the tzadik, [a righteous person] who is a true judge. "And they shall judge them" in a manner of "and they shall vindicate the righteous" - meaning that the righteousness shall rise and be elevated above, "and condemn the wicked" - meaning that the wickedness he did shall be greatly condemned to rebuke him to his face regarding his wickedness and greatly magnify the wickedness in his eyes. And this is what our Sages z"l said "and they shall vindicate the righteous from the beginning" (Makkot 2b) - meaning the righteousness he did initially shall vindicate him. "And it shall be if the wicked deserves (bin) beating" - the word "deserving" (bin) relates to understanding (binah), meaning when the righteous merits to reach the level of understanding where the essence of repentance lies, "the wicked (gets a) beating" means then the tzadik shall strike and crush wickedness. "And the judge shall cast him down" means the tzadik shall cast down the wickedness so it will not return to the person again. "And beat him before him" means the righteous person shall crush the wickedness before the person. "According to his wickedness by number" means that the tzadik shall recount before the person the transgressions according to the wickedness the person committed, and shall condemn before the person the person's deceptive deeds. Through this the tzadik shall crush the person's wickedness so it will not return again and the person will achieve complete repentance. "Forty shall he strike him" - the verse teaches the tzadik when the tzadik wishes to bring the person to complete repentance, then s/he should consider the person as a tzadik gamur, a complete righteous person. To this alludes forty - "a good eye" is one out of forty (cf. Jerusalem Talmud Terumot 4:3). Although a person must always consider themself as intermediate, at this time the person must consider themself a complete righteous person so that he will not add to their wickedness even more. And this is "lest he continue to beat him beyond these with many blows" - meaning that many more blows and punishments will be added to the person if they do not completely crush their wickedness so as not to do such things again. "And your brother shall be degraded in your eyes" - meaning you will cause yourself to exit from the Gan Eden to see the sufferings of your brother, how he is roasted in the fire of Gehinom. Therefore, see to crush the person's wickedness completely, so they will not return to their wickedness and will repent with complete repentance and merit supreme delight. This is easy to understand.
