Noam Elimelekh
God with do the will of those who fear God; hear their cries and save them. There are two questions needing answers: first, that the verse begins in the singular and concludes in the plural and, second, what desire could be in mind here, that it mentioned twice, since a tzaddik has no desire for anything to be different in his/her life due to his/her level of holiness. A tzaddik might in fact have a material need every so often, for food or clothing, silver or gold, and the like since these are the things that most of the world desires and prays for. However, most people’s prayers lack the power to be answered because their prayers lack the power to ascend. Therefore, when a tzaddik also needs these things and prays for them, and his/her pure prayer does rise without blemish, then all the prayers of Israel for this thing are bundled up in the tzaddik’s prayer and all Israel is answered through the merit of the tzaddik. This is the meaning of “God will fill the desires of those who revere God,” namely that God creates favourable conditions to respond to the tzaddik when s/he needs something and, in so doing, “God hears their cries and saves them,” that God hears the prayers of the community and saves them.
