Ngunit si Haring Solomon ay umibig sa maraming babaing banyaga, gayundin sa anak na babae ni Faraon: mga babaing Moabita, Ammonita, Edomita, Sidonia, at Hiteo.

And from the hands of Shaul. Shaul was part of the general grouping [of "his enemies"]?1I.e. Why is he being singled out? but he was his greatest enemy and pursuer. Similarly [we find], "Nineteen men and Asohel2Earlier in 2:30. where Asohel is singled out because he was equal to all of them as Rashi points out there. Similarly, "Go spy out the land and Yericho."3Yehoshua 2:1. And similarly, "King Shlomo loved [many] foreign women and [he loved] the daughter of Pharoah."4Melochim I, 11:1.

and all the tribes of Israel They are regarded by God above all the nations. Similarly, Scripture states (I Kings 11: 1): “King Solomon loved many foreign women and the daughter of Pharaoh.” Now, was the daughter of Pharaoh not included in the generalization? But the daughter of Pharaoh was as dear to him as all of them. Here, too, all the nations shall belong to the Holy One, blessed be He, and Israel is equal to all of them.

And view the land and Yericho. Wasn’t Yericho part of the land? Why then was it mentioned specifically? To indicate that it was as strong [fortified] as the entire land combined, because it was situated on the border. There are other such verses: Among the servants of David that were missing were nineteen men and Asaheil.4II Shmuel, 2:30. Wasn’t Asaheil included among the nineteen? [Why then was he mentioned specifically?] Because he was as strong as all of them. Another example: ‘And King Solomon was enamoured of many foreign wives and of Pharaoh’s daughter.’5I Kings, 11:1. Wasn’t Pharaoh’s daughter included among them? Why then was she mentioned specifically? Because he loved her as much as all of them. And also because of the sin involved since she caused him to sin more than all of them. This was taught in Sifre.6Bamidbar, 31:6.

Nineteen men and Asoel. But is not Asoel included in [the group called] "the servants of Dovid," so why is he [singled] out? [The reason is] he was worth all of them [together] and so too [a similar case], (Yehoshua 2,1), "Go see [and spy out] the land and Yericho"9Yericho was as strong as the entire land combined (see Rashi there). and so too [another similar case] "King Shlomo loved many foreign women and the daughter of Pharaoh."10Shlomo cherished Pharaoh’s daughter as much as he did the rest of them put together. (See Rashi ibid). (Kings I, 11, 1 ).
