Peri Tzadik

And through the third [Shabbat] meal, we are saved from the war of Gog and Magog against the Messiah descending from Joseph. As it is well known that the Messiah descending from Joseph will subdue all of the nations in the future to come at the time when we will merit to separate out all of the holy sparks that fell among the husks on account of the desires of this world. And after all this, there will also be the war of Gog and Magog against the Messiah descending from Joseph. For Gog and Magog are from the offspring of Amalek, and Amalek always is in rigorous opposition to the holiness of the Jewish people, even from a small lack [in Israel]. And it is especially [present] against the trait of the righteous Joseph, as is well known. And he will also have a claim and a hold against the Messiah descending from Joseph, since he has not yet completely separated from the desires of this world. And it is also from the aspect of the counsel of the snake, which is the matter of one's own [sense of touch], as we have already spoken about. For that is why they, may their memory be blessed, said about Jesse, that he died from the counsel of the snake. It was because there was still a tiny bit of the feel of the pleasure of one's own [sense of touch] in him, as they, may their memory be blessed, said in the midrash on the verse, Indeed I was born with iniquity (Psalms 51:7), it is a full iniquity even among the most pious of the pious, etc. — "Did my father Jesse intend to father me, etc." [From his holy manuscript:] But when this will withdraw, then death will be swallowed up forever [alluding to Isaiah 25:8]. And this will be through the Messiah descending from David, as they, may their memory be blessed, said, based on, He asked You for life; You granted it (Psalms 21:2): That when he shall see that the Messiah descending from Joseph was killed since he did not yet fully rectify that death be annulled, he will seek [to do so] and it will be given to him. And in the book, Divrei Emet of the Rebbe of Lublin, may the memory of the righteous be blessed, he wrote that the Messiah descending from Joseph will not be killed, since [this need for martyrdom] was already fulfilled by Rabbi Samson Ostropoli. And this thing was that he wanted to effect this by his word. And in the book, Gevurot Hashem from the Rebbe, the Maggid of Koshnitz, may the memory of the righteous be blessed, he said that the war of Gog and Magog will also no longer happen. And this too is what he was trying to effect, and to be a righteous person [who] decrees and the Holy One, blessed be He, fulfills [it]. [To here is from his holy manuscript.] And through the third meal, which corresponds to the holiness of our father Jacob, peace be upon him, who is attached to the tree of life — as our rabbis, may their memory be blessed, said (Taanit 5b) that our father Jacob, peace be upon him, did not die — we are saved from the war of Gog and Magog, which is the claim of the lack from the counsel of the snake. For this is the explanation of Jacob did not die. It is that he did not have any lack or breakage, even from one's own [sense of touch]. So he was attached to the tree of life, from which those who taste merit life [alluding to the additional prayer of Shabbat], and he ate and lives forever.
