“And the king extended to Esther” [8:4]. The king extended the golden scepter that she should stand up. She stood up from the earth and ceased crying. She asked to abrogate Haman’s decrees. She said: How can I see evil done to my people or eliminate my family? Here one asks a question. Why does she have to say twice, my people and my family? The answer is that Esther said: I am descended from King Saul and when the people are destroyed, then my family is also nothing. That is to say, a king without a people is nothing.
