לָכֵן֩ כֶּאֱכֹ֨ל קַ֜שׁ לְשׁ֣וֹן אֵ֗שׁ וַחֲשַׁ֤שׁ לֶֽהָבָה֙ יִרְפֶּ֔ה שָׁרְשָׁם֙ כַּמָּ֣ק יִֽהְיֶ֔ה וּפִרְחָ֖ם כָּאָבָ֣ק יַעֲלֶ֑ה כִּ֣י מָאֲס֗וּ אֵ֚ת תּוֹרַת֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וְאֵ֛ת אִמְרַ֥ת קְדֽוֹשׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נִאֵֽצוּ׃
דרום, אַזױ װי אַ צונג פֿון פֿײַער פֿאַרצערט שטרױ, און װי דאָס דאַרע גראָז זינקט אַראָפּ אין דער פֿלאַם, אַזױ װעט זײער װאָרצל זײַן אַזױ װי פֿױלעכץ, און זײער בלי װעט אױפֿגײן אַזױ װי שטױב; װאָרום זײ האָבן פֿאַרװאָרפֿן די תּורה פֿון גאָט פֿון צבֿאות, און דעם װאָרט פֿון הײליקן פֿון ישׂראל האָבן זײ פֿאַראַכט.

Also, through this [(laxity in Torah study)] the idolators grow in strength over Israel, as we find in the Midrash (Eichah Rabba Pethichta) on the verse (Isaiah 5:24): 'As straw [Esav] will consume a tongue of fire [Jacob].' When will the straw consume the fire? 'When they [Israel] despise the Torah of the L-rd their [Israel's] root will be like rot.' The 'merit of the fathers' will not avail them."
