He is challenged in combat by three champions, archers (1 Chronicles 12:2), on the side of Faith, resolved to demonstrate and prove that there is a God who judges the earth (Psalms 58:12); whose eyes watch over the ways of men, rewarding each according to his path, as his deeds warrant (Jeremiah 32:19); that man is master of his own deeds and has freedom of choice; and that God, through His personal Providence, is the sole Ruler of all the world's affairs, there being no other. And so they too, with wisdom and knowledge, pinned their colors to the mast (Psalms 74:4) in a spirit of investigative and philosophical contemplation. However, the heretic's arguments and proofs triumphed over their answers and so these skilled bowmen turned and fled in the hour of battle (Psalms 78:9), for the enemy prevailed.6Lamentations 1:16. There is here is a play on the name Job in Hebrew – איוב, and the Hebrew word for enemy – אויב: the 'enemy' is Job! In seeking a possible explanation for why God had allowed such terrible afflictions to befall Job, some of the Talmudic Sages (TB Baba Batra 16a) speculated on the possibility that He had confused איוב (Job) with אויב (enemy). However, these musings are all refuted by their colleagues.

all distress and all trials -- bad things happen to a person sometimes to sadden him and make him suffer for his sins, as written (Eicha 1:16) "Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow..which the L-ord inflicted". And even if he is a tzadik (righteous person), he bears for his generation (to atone for them) like the prophet Yechezkel. Sometimes the intent is to test him.

A story occurred that the son and daughter of Rabbi Ishmael the High Priest were captured. Once two nobles met in a certain place. One of them said; I have a servant whose like cannot be found in the whole world. The other one said: I have a maidservant whose like is not found in the whole world. They said: let us bring them together and we will divide the children. They brought them together and put them in a room at night and they did not know that they were related. He sat in a corner and said: O, I am a priest descended from only high priests and I should marry a maidservant? She sat in another corner and cried and said: I am the daughter of a high priest and am supposed to marry a gentile servant. They cried this way the whole night. When the day came, they saw each other and recognized each other and they began to cry and scream until their souls left them. Concerning them the prophet Jeremiah lamented, over these my eyes pour water.13Lamentations, 1:16.
