תְּשֻׁא֣וֹת ׀ מְלֵאָ֗ה עִ֚יר הֽוֹמִיָּ֔ה קִרְיָ֖ה עַלִּיזָ֑ה חֲלָלַ֙יִךְ֙ לֹ֣א חַלְלֵי־חֶ֔רֶב וְלֹ֖א מֵתֵ֥י מִלְחָמָֽה׃
דו פֿולע מיט טומל, דו רױשיקע שטאָט, דו לוסטיקער כּרך? דײַנע דערשלאָגענע זײַנען ניט פֿון שװערד דערשלאָגן, און ניט אין מלחמה געטײטע.
Lamentations
More fortunate were those slain by the sword than those slain by hunger. For they [(the latter)] oozed [excrement] when [their bellies] split [(from hunger and)] from the fruits of the field [i.e., from the roots and grasses that they were forced to subsist on].
