Rashi
When [the Beis Hamikdosh] was being constructed it was built of whole stones carried [from the quarry]. As it was removed from the mountain, through the worm [=a שמיר],15See Mishnayos Avos 5:6. Radak indicates that Shlomo sent an eagle to bring him the shamir which was in the Garden of Eden. [i.e.,] as it came from there they set it into the wall of the structure,16That is why it is called אבן שלמה [=whole stones], because they were used exactly as they arrived, without being cut or chiseled. and they did not chisel it with any metal tools. And the “stone” mentioned above,17 5:31. is a controversy in [Maseches] Sotah.18 48b.
Tze'enah Ure'enah
“When the House was built, only complete stones” [6:7]. The Pesikta said that the stones broke by themselves and ascended the walls of the Temple.11Pesikta Rabbati, Piska 6; Yalkut Shimoni, I Kings, Remez 182. Rav Huna said in the name of Rav Asi that even the spirits and demons helped build the Temple. Rabbi Haninah the son of Dosa saw how the people of his city brought presents and donations to Jerusalem. R. Haninah said: once I also had to bring something to Jerusalem. He saw a large stone that was very beautiful. Five men came along and Rabbi Haninah said to them. Will you bring this stone for me to Jerusalem? They said: give us five gulden, but also put your hand on it and we will quickly bring the stone to Jerusalem. Rabbi Haninah put his fingers on it and they came to Jerusalem in an hour. Rabbi Haninah wanted to pay the men, but he could not find them. The sages say that they were angels.12Yalkut Shimoni, I Kings, Remez 182.
