Midrasch zu Nechemja 8:11
וְהַלְוִיִּ֞ם מַחְשִׁ֤ים לְכָל־הָעָם֙ לֵאמֹ֣ר הַ֔סּוּ כִּ֥י הַיּ֖וֹם קָדֹ֑שׁ וְאַל־תֵּעָצֵֽבוּ׃
Auch die Leviten beschwichtigten das Volk mit den Worten: Seid still! denn dieser Tag ist heilig, seid nicht betrübt.
Sifrei Devarim
"and bailiffs for your tribes": wielders of the lash, viz. (II Chronicles 19:11) "and the Levite bailiffs before you," and (Nechemiah 8:11) "and the Levites silenced all the people."
