וַיָּקִ֨ימוּ עָלָ֜יו גַּל־אֲבָנִ֣ים גָּד֗וֹל עַ֚ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיָּ֥שָׁב יְהוָ֖ה מֵחֲר֣וֹן אַפּ֑וֹ עַל־כֵּ֠ן קָרָ֞א שֵׁ֣ם הַמָּק֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ עֵ֣מֶק עָכ֔וֹר עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ (פ)
Dann errichteten sie über ihm einen großen Steinhaufen, noch bis auf diesen Tag [zu sehen], und der Herr ließ ab von seiner Zornesglut. Deshalb nannte man den Namen dieses Ortes Tal Achor [des Verderbens] — bis auf diesen Tag.
Tractate Semachot
An excommunicated person who died has to be ‘stoned’27Cf. M.Ḳ. 15a (Sonc. ed., p. 88).—not that they place a high heap of stones upon him, as in the case of Achan28Cf. Josh. 7, 26.—but the messenger of the Beth Din takes a stone and places it on the coffin in order to fulfil the duty of ‘stoning’ in his case.29Cf. M.Ḳ. loc. cit., and ‘Eduy. V, 6 (Sonc. ed., p. 35) in the case of Eliezer b. Ḥanok.
