וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֤יד אֶל־יוֹאָב֙ וְאֶל־שָׂרֵ֣י הָעָ֔ם לְכ֗וּ סִפְרוּ֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִבְּאֵ֥ר שֶׁ֖בַע וְעַד־דָּ֑ן וְהָבִ֣יאוּ אֵלַ֔י וְאֵדְעָ֖ה אֶת־מִסְפָּרָֽם׃
Und David sprach zu Joab und zu den Fürsten des Volkes: 'Geh, nummeriere Israel von Beerscheba bis Dan; und bring mir ein Wort, damit ich die Summe von ihnen kenne.'

The king said to Yoav the general of the army that was with him, "Go to all the tribes of Yisroel from Don until Be'er Shevah and number the people [in order] that I should be able to know, the count of the people."
