Targum zu Schemot 15:23

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ מָרָ֔תָה וְלֹ֣א יָֽכְל֗וּ לִשְׁתֹּ֥ת מַ֙יִם֙ מִמָּרָ֔ה כִּ֥י מָרִ֖ים הֵ֑ם עַל־כֵּ֥ן קָרָֽא־שְׁמָ֖הּ מָרָֽה׃

Dann kamen sie nach Mara, sie konnten aber kein Wasser trinken in Mara, weil es bitter war; deswegen nannte man den Ort Mara [bitter].

And they came to Marah, but could not drink the waters of Marah because they were bitter; therefore he called the name of it Marah.
