וְדִשְּׁנ֖וּ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וּפָרְשׂ֣וּ עָלָ֔יו בֶּ֖גֶד אַרְגָּמָֽן׃
And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon.

They shall take the ashes. Not that they should place the ashes there (as the word ודשנו might imply).
