וַיְשַׁלַּ֨ח יְהוָ֜ה בָּעָ֗ם אֵ֚ת הַנְּחָשִׁ֣ים הַשְּׂרָפִ֔ים וַֽיְנַשְּׁכ֖וּ אֶת־הָעָ֑ם וַיָּ֥מָת עַם־רָ֖ב מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

2) (Ibid. 6): "and they bit the people." This always connotes the inferior ones," and this is followed by "and a large number died of Israel," [connoting the superior ones].
