Tractate Derekh Eretz Rabbah
Concerning them who suffer insults but do not insult, who hear themselves reviled and do not answer back, who perform [religious precepts] from love26Of God and not the expectation of reward. and rejoice in their chastisements,27Because imposed by God either to test their faith or to punish them in this world for their sins, rewarding their virtues in the hereafter. Scripture declares, But they that love Him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might.28Judg. 5, 31.
