Ézéchiel 43:15 Commentaire : Tze'enah Ure'enah & Rashi

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“And the altar hearth, four cubits” [43:15]. The altar was four cubits high. Our sages say: why is the altar called Ariel? It is because the fire that came down on the altar from Heaven had the image of a lion, the king of beasts.3Mezudat Zion, Ezekiel, 43:15. The altar was twenty-four cubits long and twenty-four cubits wide.

Rashi

And the altar hearth The height of the top of the altar, from the circuit and above; and in the [Second] Temple it was only three [cubits]. Jonathan, too, renders: And the altar was four cubits.
