Après Ahod vint Samgar, fils d’Anat, qui défit les Philistins, au nombre de six cents hommes, avec des aiguillons à bœufs. Lui aussi fut un libérateur d’Israël.

Midrash Tanchuma on Parshat Acharey Mot writes: G-d said to Israel, "in the past you have been helped by means of human beings; in Egypt by Moses and Aaron; in the days of Sisera by Barak and Deborah; against the Midianites by Shamgar etc. throughout the period of the judges. Because G-d employed a human being as His instrument in all of these salvations, the salvation did not last, and you became enslaved again and again. In the future however, I MYSELF will be your salvation, and you will never again be subjugated." This is the meaning of Isaiah 45,17, "Israel will be saved by the Lord, an eternal salvation."
