Jose said: ‘What is the connection of this with the verse that immediately precedes, “A man also or a woman that hath a familiar spirit or that is a wizard shall be put to death” (Lev. 20, 27)? It is this: that having admonished the Israelites to sanctify themselves, the Scripture now admonishes the priests to sanctify themselves specially. Later, too, it admonishes the Levites (Num. 18, 21 et seq.), so that all should become holy and pure.
