Sha'arei Kedusha

Our sages, of blessed memory, said,506Talmud Bavli, Yoma 86b ibid.; Sanhedrin 7b “When Rava would go out to judge, he would say, ‘I willingly go out to die etc.’” Our sages, of blessed memory, stated,507See Midrash Shemot Rabba 27:9, and elsewhere “The verse states,508Proverbs 6:1 ‘My son, if you have been a guarantor for your fellow etc.’ Rav Huna explained that this refers to a person who was appointed to a position of authority over the masses. However, the next verse continues,509Proverbs 6:2 ‘You have been trapped by the words of your mouth, snared by the words of your mouth. Do this, therefore, my child, and be rescued; for you have come into your fellow’s hand. Go humble yourself etc.’” However, if he does not, about him the verse states,510Proverbs 6:32 “One who commits adultery with a married woman lacks an understanding heart, he who destroys his own soul will do this,” and they have no mercy upon him in purgatory (Gehinnom).
