153. The union and joining of mercy with judgment, or the connection of HaShem-יהו"ה with the worlds, depends on and is initiated by the merits of mankind. This union, in turn, causes a precipitation of influence from Above, as scripture states,²¹⁴Psalms 85:12-13 “Truth sprouts from the earth (that is, from below) and HaShem-יהו"ה will give goodness (that is, He will respond from above).” The merit and awakening from below is called Mayim Nukvim – Feminine Waters, whereas the influence from above, which follows, is called Mayim D'Churin – Masculine Waters.

[Mar Rachumai's students asked,] "What is patach?" [He said,] "An opening [petach]." [They asked,] "And what is an opening?" [He replied,] "It is a north wind, which opens to the whole world. From the gate through which the evil came out, the good comes out." [They asked,] "And what is 'good'?” He mocked them, "Didn't I say to you, 'a small patach'?" They said to him, "We forgot. Teach us." He repeated [the teachings from 34 and 36, above]. He said to them, "To what can this be compared? To a king who has a throne. Sometimes he takes it on his arm and sometimes on his head." They said to him, "Why?" [He replied,] "Because it is beautiful and [it would be] a pity to sit upon it." They said, "Where does he place it on his head?" He said to them, "In the open mem, as it is written, 'Truth sprouts from the land, and righteousness looks down from the heavens.' (Psalms 85:12)"

Thus, the general principle is that wherever in Torah you find “Lord HaShem-Adona”y HaShem-אדנ"י יהו"ה,” [pronounced Adona”y Elohi”m-אדנ"י אלהי"ם] it is the secret of the preparation and adornment of the Indwelling Presence of HaShem-יהו״ה, the Shechinah, below, to unify with Understanding-Binah and to receive beneficence and emanation from Her. In contrast, wherever in Torah you find “HaShem Lord-HaShem Adona”y-יהו״ה אדנ״י,” [pronounced Elohi”m Adona”y-[אלהי"ם אדנ"י it refers to the secret of the bestowal of beneficence drawn from Above to below. This is the secret of the verse,¹⁵¹Psalms 85:12 “Truth-Emet-אמת will sprout from the earth-Eretz-ארץ, and righteousness-Tzedek-צדק will peer from heaven-Shamayim-שמים.” What does the next verse say? “HaShem-יהו״ה, too, will give goodness-Tov-טוב, and our land-Artzeinu-ארצינו will yield its produce.”
