To explain this we must go back to the tradition which says that he was the son of the Shunammite woman who befriended Elisha, and that his name contains an allusion to Elisha’s words, “about this set time, according to the time of life, thou wilt embrace (hobeketh) a son” (2 Kings 4, 16). The promise was fulfilled, but the child subsequently died. Why?
