Ézéchiel 8:5 Midrash : Devarim Rabbah, Bamidbar Rabbah, Vayikra Rabbah & Eikhah Rabbah

Devarim Rabbah

Another matter: “When you will beget children” – this what the verse said: “The act of the righteous brings life; the yield of the wicked is sin” (Proverbs 10:16). “The act of the righteous brings life” – Rabbi Tanḥum said: This is Elifaz, who grew up on Isaac’s lap.39Elifaz was a son of Esau. Because of the influence of his grandfather Isaac, Elifaz did not kill Jacob even though Esau commanded him to do so (see Rashi on Genesis 29:11). “The yield of the wicked is sin” – this is Amalek, who grew up on Esau’s lap.
Another matter: “The act of the righteous brings life” (Proverbs 10:16) – everything that David and Solomon his son did was to give life to Israel. What is “the yield of [tevuat] the wicked is sin” (Proverbs 10:16) – with one entry [bevia] that Menashe made into the Holy of Holies, he brought about sin for Israel, as he crafted a four-faced idol and took it into the Sanctuary. From where is this derived? As it is stated: “And behold, north of the gate of the altar was this image of infuriation in the entrance [babia]” (Ezekiel 8:5). Rabbi Aḥa said: This is a great cry of injustice [biya] for the world; the temporary resident ousts the landlord.40The idol, as it were, ousted God’s Presence. Why did he craft a four-faced idol? It was corresponding to the four beasts that bear the throne of the Holy One blessed be He.41See Ezekiel 1:5–10. Another matter: Why four faces? It was corresponding to the four directions of the world. Anyone who would come from the four directions of the world would prostrate himself to this idol.
What did the Holy One blessed be He do to [Menashe]? He delivered him into the hand of his enemies. From where is this derived? As it is stated: “The Lord brought upon them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria. [They captured Menashe…] and bound him with fetters” (II Chronicles 33:11). They crafted for him a bronze cauldron, placed him inside it, and they kindled a fire beneath it, and he was being burned in it. At that moment, Menashe cried out to all the deities in the world to whom he would sacrifice, but not even one of them answered him, as it is stated: “Even if one will call to it, it will not answer, it will not save him from his trouble” (Isaiah 46:7).
When Menashe saw that his trouble was severe, as not even one of them answered him, he began crying out to the Holy One blessed be He. He said before Him: ‘Master of the universe, I cried out to all the deities in the world, although I knew that they lacked substance. Master of the universe, You are the God over all gods, and if You do not answer me, I will say: Perhaps, God forbid, that all beings are alike.’ The Holy One blessed be He said to him: ‘Wicked one, by right I should not answer you, as you have angered Me; however, in order not to slam the door before penitents, so they will not say: Menashe sought to repent and was not accepted, I will answer you.’ From where is this derived? As it is stated: “He prayed to Him, and He acceded to his entreaty [vaye’ater lo]” (II Chronicles 33:13) – He excavated on his behalf [vayaḥtor lo].42The Midrash elsewhere (Vayikra Rabba 30:3) explains this with the following statement: Rabbi Elazar bar Rabbi Shimon said: In Arabia, they call digging [ḥatirata] atirata. This teaches that the ministering angels were sealing the windows of the firmament so that his prayer would not ascend to Heaven. What did the Holy One blessed be He do? He excavated beneath the Throne of Glory and accepted his prayer. “And returned him to Jerusalem to his kingdom” (II Chronicles 33:13) – Rabbi Shmuel bar Unya said in the name of Rabbi Aḥa: He returned him with the wind, just as it is said: He causes the wind to blow. At that moment, Menashe acknowledged that the Lord is God.
Another matter: “The act of the righteous is life” (Proverbs 10:16) – these are the righteous ones who came into the land, who had lived in the days of Moses. “The yield of the wicked is sin” (Proverbs 10:16) – “when you will beget children, and children’s children, and you will have been long in the land…”

Bamidbar Rabbah

“This is the law of jealousy when a woman will stray while married to her husband, and become defiled” (Numbers 5:29).
“This is the law of jealousy [hakenaot]” – so said the Holy One blessed be He: This law of zealotry [kenaot] vis-à-vis idol worship will exist forever. Just as the Holy One blessed be He exacted punishment upon the worshippers of the calf with jealousy, so he will exact retribution against them throughout the generations. Likewise, it says: “They incensed Me [kinuni] with a non-god, angered Me with their vanities” (Deuteronomy 32:21). What is written? “Bloated with famine” (Deuteronomy 32:24), corresponding to: “Her belly will distend,” as Onkelos translated: Swollen with famine. “From without the sword will bereave” (Deuteronomy 32:25), corresponding to those whom the Levites killed by sword. “And ketev meriri’ (Deuteronomy 32:24) – this is pestilence, corresponding to: “The Lord afflicted the people with a plague” (Exodus 32:35). “When a woman will stray while married to her husband” – “The adulterous wife takes strangers in place of her husband” (Ezekiel 16:32); the prophet admonished them that instead of [serving] the Holy One blessed be He they engaged in idol worship.
“Or a man who will be overcome with the spirit of jealousy, and warn his wife and stand the woman before the Lord. The priest shall perform for her this entire ritual” (Numbers 5:30).
“Or a man who will be overcome with the spirit of jealousy” – Moses was prophesying that the Holy One blessed be He is destined to be jealous in their regard. That is why he wrote at the beginning of the portion: “A spirit of jealousy overcame him” (Numbers 5:14), as he is speaking of the past jealousy regarding the calf. At the end it is written: “will be overcome with the spirit of jealousy,” which is said regarding the future.
“And warn [kineh] his wife” – this was in the days of Ezekiel when Israel was engaged in idol worship and the Holy One blessed be He warned [vekineh] them, as it is stated: “He said to me: Son of man, lift your eyes now to the way northward. I lifted my eyes to the way northward, and behold, north of the gate of the altar was this image of infuriation [kina] in the entrance” (Ezekiel 8:5). “And stand the woman before the Lord” – as Ezekiel admonished them, to cause them to repent to the Holy One blessed be He, to no avail. “The priest shall perform for her” – this is Ezekiel.184Ezekiel was a priest. “This entire ritual” – that he and Jeremiah the priest prophesied in their regard that punishments would befall them just as they befell Israel in the wilderness due to the act of the calf. The punishment befell Israel in their days. You find that in the act of the calf they died by sword, so in the days of these priests it is written in their regard: “And those for the sword to the sword” (Jeremiah 43:11). With the calf they died unnatural deaths, so, in the days of Jeremiah: “They will die deaths of diseases” (Jeremiah 16:4). With the calf they died of pestilence, as it is stated: “The Lord afflicted the people with a plague” (Exodus 32:35); so in the days of Jeremiah: “And those for pestilence to pestilence.”185No such verse appears in Jeremiah. Perhaps the reference is to: “Those for death to death” (Jeremiah 43:11). Regarding the calf, it is written: “And on the day of My reckoning [pokdi]” (Exodus 32:34), and in the days of Ezekiel, it is written: “Those appointed [pekudot] over the city, draw near” (Ezekiel 9:1). That is why it is stated: “The priest shall perform for her this entire ritual.”
“The man will be absolved of iniquity, and that woman will bear her iniquity” (Numbers 5:31).
“The man will be absolved of iniquity” – this is the Holy One blessed be He, who will cleanse Israel so that they will no longer perform any iniquity before Him, as this is what He said to them by means of Ezekiel: “I will sprinkle pure water upon you, [and you will be purified; from all your impurities and from all your idols I will purify you], I will give you a new heart…I will place My spirit within you…I will save you from all your impurities” (Ezekiel 36:25–27, 29).
“And that woman will bear her iniquity” – just as it says: “Not for your sake am I acting, the utterance of the Lord God, let it be known to you; be ashamed and humiliated because of your ways, house of Israel” (Ezekiel 36:32). Just as the Holy One blessed be He forgave them regarding the calf, and he acceded to them, rested in their midst, and took them into the land, so, Ezekiel prophesied that the Holy One blessed be He will do so again ultimately, as it is stated: “Speak to them: So said the Lord God: Behold, I am taking [the children of Israel]…[and I will bring them to their land].… they will no longer be defiled with their idols.… My dwelling place will be [among them].… [and the nations will know] that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel when My Sanctuary is in their midst forever” (Ezekiel 37:21, 23, 27–28).

Vayikra Rabbah

“On a house in the land of your possession” (Leviticus 14:34), this is the Temple,27This is based on the fact that the verse refers to a house, singular, rather than houses, plural. It is thus understood to refer to a house that is singularly unique (Maharzu). as it is stated: “Behold, I am profaning My Temple, the pride of your strength” (Ezekiel 24:21). “The one to whom the house belongs shall come” (Leviticus 14:35), this is the Holy One blessed be He, as it is stated: “Because of My house that is destroyed” (Haggai 1:9). “And tell the priest” (Leviticus 14:35), this is Jeremiah, as it is stated: “Of the priests that are in Anatot” (Jeremiah 1:1). “Something like a mark appears to be in the house” (Leviticus 14:35), this is the filth of idol worship. Some say: This is the idol of Manasseh. That is what is written: “Behold, north of the altar gate, the image of provocation in the entry [babia]” (Ezekiel 8:5). What is babia? Woe, woe [bia bia] that the resident evacuates the owner from his house.
Rabbi Berekhya said: It is written: “For the bedding is too short for stretching out” (Isaiah 28:20); the bed cannot hold a woman, her husband, and her paramour together. Rather, “the cover is too narrow for taking cover [kehitkanes]” (Isaiah 28:20); you have created a great rival for Him of whom it is written: “He gathers [kones] sea water like a mound” (Psalms 33:7).28Because Israel engaged in idolatry, God removed His presence from their midst and from the Temple.
“The priest shall command and they shall empty the house” (Leviticus 14:36) – “He took the treasures of the House of the Lord” (I Kings 14:26). “He shall demolish the house” (Leviticus 14:45) – “He demolished this House” (Ezra 5:12). “He shall take it outside the city” (Leviticus 14:45) – “and exiled the people to Babylon” (Ezra 5:12). One might [think] it will be forever; the verse states: “They shall take other stones” (Leviticus 14:42), as it is stated: “Therefore, so said the Lord God: Behold, I am laying a foundation in Zion, a stone, a trial stone, a precious cornerstone of a sturdy foundation; the faithful will not hurry” (Isaiah 28:16).
