La Genèse 46:6 Midrash : Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Bereshit Rabbah & Midrash Tehillim

Midrash Tanchuma Buber

Esau said: How long will I trouble my brother? He arose and went away, as stated (in Gen. 36:6): THEN ESAU TOOK HIS WIVES…. < AND WENT INTO A LAND AWAY FROM HIS BROTHER JACOB >. What did Jacob do? When his children and his flocks had crossed over into the land of Israel, he arose and sold all that he had brought with him from outside of the land. Then he made it into piles of gold. He said to Esau: You have a share with me in the cave of Machpelah. Now what do you want, to receive these piles of gold or to share < the cave > with me? Esau began by saying: What do I want with < a share > of this cave? This gold is what I want. Now where is it shown that Jacob sold all that he had brought from outside of the land and that Esau took it? Where Joseph said so (in Gen. 50:5): MY FATHER HAD ME SWEAR, SAYING: SEE, I AM DYING. IN MY GRAVE WHICH I DUG < IN THE LAND OF CANAAN, THERE YOU SHALL BURY ME >. R. Huna b. R. Abbin the Priest said: When Jacob wanted to come to the land of Israel, what is written (in Gen. 31:18)? AND HE DROVE ALL HIS LIVESTOCK < AND ALL HIS GOODS THAT HE HAD ACQUIRED … IN PADDAN-ARAM >. Now, when he wanted to go down into Egypt, what is written (in Gen. 46:6)? AND THEY TOOK ALONG THEIR LIVESTOCK AND ALL THEIR GOODS, WHICH THEY HAD ACQUIRED IN THE LAND OF CANAAN. Now, in regard to what he had brought from the land of Aram-Naharaim, where was that? You simply learn from here that Jacob had sold it and given it to Esau.46For an alternative explanation of the same tradition, see Gen. R. 100:5; Exod. R. 31:17; Rashi on Gen. 50:5. Then would you say that something was lacking? The Holy One simply filled his loss and restored everything to him immediately, as stated (in Gen. 33:18:) NOW JACOB CAME WHOLE.

Bereshit Rabbah

“God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said: Jacob, Jacob, and he said: Here I am” (Genesis 46:2).
“He said: I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, as I will make you a great nation there” (Genesis 46:3).
“I will go down with you to Egypt and I will also take you up again and Joseph will place his hand over your eyes” (Genesis 46:4).

“God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night…He said: I am the God Beit El14These words do not appear in the verse and should be deleted (Rashash). … and I will also take you up again” – you and all the righteous like you.
“And Joseph will place his hand over your eyes…” – Rabbi Ḥagai said in the name of Rabbi Yitzḥak: Provided that “Joseph will place his hand over your eyes.”15This means that Joseph would take care of Jacob, and provide for all his needs, and Jacob would not have to attend to his own livelihood. Alternatively, it means that Joseph would close Jacob’s eyes after his death, in which case God is stating that He will bring Jacob back to the Land of Israel eventually, but not in his lifetime (Yefeh To’ar).
“Jacob arose from Beersheba and the sons of Israel conveyed Jacob their father, and their children, and their wives, in the wagons that Pharaoh sent to convey him” (Genesis 46:5).
“They took their livestock, and their property that they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and they came to Egypt: Jacob, and all his descendants with him” (Genesis 46:6).
“His sons, and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and all his descendants, he brought with him to Egypt” (Genesis 46:7).

“Jacob arose…. They took their livestock…His sons, and his sons’ sons…” – Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai said: Daughters of sons are considered like sons. Sons of daughters are not considered like sons.

Midrash Tehillim

"And there was a famine in the land." Rabbi Judah bar Nachman said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, "Jacob was deserving of descending to Egypt in chains of iron and collars. But the Holy One, blessed be He, arranged for many plots and melodies, and Joseph was sold into slavery to bring about Jacob's descent. And there was a famine in the land. Why was it so severe? As it is written (Genesis 46:6), "And Jacob and all his offspring with him came to Egypt." Rabbi Pinchas the son of Chama said in a parable, "It is like a cow that they wanted to pull to her yoke, but she would not be pulled. What did they do? They first pulled her son, and then she followed after him." Thus did the Holy One, blessed be He, orchestrate the melodies that Joseph's brothers played, so that they would also descend to Egypt and Jacob would come, as it is written (Hosea 11:4), "With human cords, I drew them; with cords of love, I was to them like one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them."...
