Tosefta Sotah
And as soon as the feet of the priests first entered the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan piled up, as it is said (Josh. 3:16), "And the water piled up [... at Adam, the town that is next to] Tzartan." Twelve mil by twelve mil was the height of the water, the words of Rabbi Yehuda. Said, Rabbi Elazar bar Shimon, and which one is lighter, water or man? They would say water is lighter than man. It teaches that the waters were stacked up and reached upward, wave upon wave, about three hundred mil, until the kings of every nation saw them, as it is said (Josh. 5:1), "And when all the kings of the Amorites, which are on the other side of the Jordan westward ... heard [that God had dried up the waters of the Jordan], etc." And so too Rachab says to the emissaries of Joshua (Josh. 2:10-11), "For we heard that God had dried up the Sea of Reeds before them, etc., and when we heard, our hearts melted, etc."
