Mais tu préposeras les Lévites au tabernacle du statut, à tout son attirail et à tout ce qui le concerne: ce sont eux qui porteront le tabernacle et tout son attirail, eux qui en feront le service, et qui doivent camper à l’entour.
Jerusalem Talmud Chagigah
Rebbi Abun bar Ḥiyya asked before Rebbi Ze`ira: Where does one appear53While the lay person is forbidden to appear in the Temple without a sacrifice (Ex. 23:15, 34:20), this is an obligation separate from that of appearance. The question is if the latter is satisfied only in the Temple district or already in the enlarged sacred district, representing the camp of the Levites in the desert (Num. 1:50).? On the Temple Mount or in the Temple courtyards? He told him, let us hear from the following54Tosephta 1:1. Babli 4b, Yebamot72b, from another verse Mekhilta dR. Ismael Mišpatim Chap. 20 (ed. Horovitz-Rabin p. 333). Since a sacrifice may be brought only in the Temple and the impure person may not enter, he may not bring; one concludes that he need not come.: “The impure is exempt from appearance, for it is written, you shall come there and bring there.” And one impure in the impurity of the dead may not enter the Temple Mount55This is not quite exact, Mishnah Kelim1:8. The person whose impurity originates in his body may not enter the Temple Mount; the one impure by the impurity of the dead may not enter the immediate surroundings of the Temple domain; the person not impure but not pure may not enter the Temple courtyards.. This implies that appearance is in the Temple courtyards.
