were defiled Heb. נְגֹאֲלוּ, an expression of defilement. Comp. (Mal. 1:7) “polluted bread (מְגֹאָל).”

נגאלו Are defiled. The grammatical form of the word is a compound of the Niphal and Pual.²The נ of נגאלו is the characteristic of the Niphal; the Holem in the first syllable that of the Pual; the Niphal being נִגְאֲלוּ, the Pual גּאֲׁלוּ.
