The mystery of the workings of Nature is illustrated by the example of the weather and rainfall. Though we are familiar with these everyday phenomena, our understanding of them is limited and specific predictions about them are quite beyond us.⁴¹It has been recognized in recent years that the behavior of large physical systems can be unpredictable even though they are subject to deterministic laws. Though the rules by which fate is determined are in principle deterministic, e.g., good is always rewarded and evil always punished, the mechanism is so sensitive to changes in initial conditions and is affected by so many variables that it defies analysis and prediction becomes impossible.
