Tafsiran Ester 5:1: Rashi & Tze'enah Ure'enah

Rashi

In majesty. Regal clothing. But our Rabbis said that Divine Inspiration enwrapped her,1Maseches Megillah 14b. The text should have stated בגדי מלכות [regal clothing]. The inference is that she was cloaked in majesty itself, i.e., in Divine Majesty. as it is says, “And a spirit enwrapped Amasai.”2I Divrei Hayomim 12:19.

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“And Esther donned royal apparel” [5:1]. Here one asks a question. Why does it have to say that she put on clothes? It is obvious that when she would go to the king, she would put on royal garments. The answer is that Esther did not put on makeup, as is customary for women. However, she had to put on royal garments for the sake of the king. Otherwise, Esther would have worn sackcloth. Esther first donned the royal garments when she came to the court of the king.
