Tafsiran Kejadian 28:13: Tze'enah Ure'enah, Rashi, Chizkuni & Da'at Zekenim

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“He said, I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac” [28:13]. The Holy One appeared to Jacob and said to him. I am the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. Ba’al ha-Turim asks a question. Why does the verse say that He is the God of Abraham his father and with Isaac he does not say that he is the father of Jacob? Ba’al ha-Turim gives no answer.13Ba’al ha-Turim, Genesis, 28:13. However, Rabbi Isserl gives an explanation. Jacob was afraid that the blessing of Isaac would not remain, because he had taken the blessing with tricks, but Isaac had intended to bless Esau and not Jacob. Therefore, the verse comes and says that the Holy One had said to Jacob, Abraham is your proper father. That is to say, Abraham thought of you like a father. Abraham did not want to bless Isaac because he had seen that he had two children, Jacob and Esau. Abraham was afraid that if he blessed Isaac, he would also be blessing Esau. Therefore, Abraham said: I will not bless Isaac; let God himself bless him. Abraham did not intend to bless Esau, but Isaac did intend to bless Esau. Therefore, the verse says, Abraham is the father of Jacob and Isaac is not similarly mentioned as a father, because he had intended to bless Esau.14Be’ure Maharai, Genesis, 28:13.

Rashi asks a question. Why does it say, “the God of Isaac”? One does not say the “God of” about a person when they are alive. That is, there are many righteous people previously, but it often happens when he becomes older, he often denies God. Therefore, the person should not believe in himself before his death. The explanation is that Isaac was blind and a blind person is like a dead person. The evil inclination had left Isaac. Therefore, it says, “the God of Isaac” even during his lifetime.15Rashi, Genesis, 28:13.
