Tafsiran Yeremia 2:23: Tze'enah Ure'enah & Rashi

Tze'enah Ure'enah

“How can you say, I am not defiled” [2:23]. The Holy One said to Israel: how can you say that you are not impure with transgressions and have not worshiped foreign gods? Come and hear what you have done near the house of Peor. You have worshiped foreign gods and pursued illicit sex there. You still do the same things today. You are like a young horse or a young camel that one wants to teach it to work. They go back and forth. So too are you also Israel.3Rashi, Jeremiah, 2:23.

young she-camel Heb. בכרה, a young female camel, that loves to wander. “The young camels (בכרי) of Midian” (Isa. 60:6) is translated “and they are young camels,” as we find in Sanhedrin 52a: There are many old camels laden with the skins of young camels (הוגני).

clinging Adhering to the ways of her youth, an expression similar to: “it would have clung (מסריך סריך)” (Chullin 51a). This may be associated with “a shoe thong (שרוך נעל)” (Gen. 14:23). She binds the ways of her youth in her heart.
