Pemikiran Yahudi Pengkhotbah 2:10: The Third Beit HaMikdash

The Third Beit HaMikdash

It is possible to explain that the upper side-chambers [built around the Sanctuary] mentioned earlier, were wider than the lower ones because the wall that supported them was wide at its bottom and narrow at its top. Therefore, the upper chambers took up more space than the lower ones, because the wall was not as thick at that height as it was below. They were also supported by pillars. Therefore, the upper stories could be as wide as possible. There was no fear that they would fall because they were supported by pillars. These chambers, by contrast, were built in three stories, one on top of the other, and thus the wall on one side was not narrower than on the other side, and they did not have pillars. Therefore, it was necessary that the upper chamber be narrower than the lower [ones] out of fear that the upper stories would fall if they would be as wide as the lower stories. No such fear existed with regard to the lower stories, because they were supported by the earth or were close to it. This is intimated by the phrase,24Yechezkel 42:6. עַל כֵּן נֶאֱצַל מֵהַתַּחְתֹּנוֹת וּמֵהַתִּיכֹנוֹת מֵהָאָרֶץ, which means, “for this reason, the upper stories were made shorter (נֶּאֶצְלוּ) than those below them.” The same root as found in the word נֶאֱצַל is used in the verse:25Bamidbar 11:17. “I will separate (וְאָצַלְתִּי) from the spirit that rests on you…,” and “I did not remove (אָצַלְתִּי) from them….”26Koheles 2:10. Similarly, Targum Yonason renders the verse in Yechezkel, “For this reason, they were constricted.”
