[Sec. 19] 41. [The beginner] must also know that while the [divine] names which may not be erased15Cf. Sifrei on Deuteronomy, piska 61, on Deut. 12:4. Cf. also Shevuot 35a. are numerous, and while there are ten names [corresponding to] the ten sefirot, there exists one general name for all the sefirot. It is the four-letter name YDVD. The meaning is that Y = Ḥokhmah, H = Binah, V includes six sefirot,16The numerical value of vav is six. The six sefirot are those from Gedulah to Hod. and the final H = Malkhut. Eyn Sof disappears into Keter, and its light spreads in these four letters from yod to heh, and from heh to vav, and from vav to the final heh. However, this name will become full with ten letters to hint at this. These [letters are] yod, heh, vav, heh.17The letters are spelled out in full, thus equaling ten. Cf. n. 13 above. The punctuation of the Name also indicates the ten sefirot in this manner: YODEVADE. The ḥolem18Hebrew vowel with the o sound. [indicates] Keter, the kamaẓ19Hebrew vowel with the a sound. [indicates] Tiferet, the first [segol]20Hebrew vowel with the e sound. [indicates] Ḥokhmah, Binah, Ḥesed, and the last [segol] indicates Neẓaḥ, Hod, Yesod. The dot in the kamaḥ [hints] at Gevurah, and the letters themselves are Malkhut. [Thus the Name is] expanded to hint at the mystery of Ten. [This is] also [true concerning] the yods in this manner: YOD HY VYV HY. This name is [contained] in Ḥokhmah-within-Keter. The expanded name with ‘alefs is within the actual Ḥokhmah. However, since each of the sefirot contains the ten [sefirot], the four[-lettered] Name is found in each of them. Thus YAHAVAHA, [voweled] entirely with kamaẓ is in Keter, YADAVADA, [voweled] entirely with pataḥ,21Hebrew vowel with the a sound. is in Ḥokhmah, YEDEVEDE, [voweled] entirely with ẓere,22Hebrew vowel with the e sound. is in Binah, YEDEVEDE, [voweled] entirely with segol, is in Ḥesed. YIDIVIDI, [voweled] entirely with shva,23Hebrew vowel signifying either a short e or else no sound. is in Gevurah, YODOVODO, [voweled] entirely with ḥolem,24I.e., o. is in Tiferet YIDIVIDI, [voweled] entirely with ḥirik,25Hebrew vowel with the e sound. is in Neẓaḥ, YUDUVUDU, [voweled] entirely with shuruk,26Hebrew vowel with the u sound. is in Hod, YUDUD, [voweled] entirely in shuruk, is in Yesod. Malkhut [goes] with the Name of the plain [unvoweled] letters since she is made up of all of the [sefirot] and acts according to the influence of each and every sefirah upon it. Therefore she is voweled according to her [source of] sustenance.
