Furthermore, in regard to all other sins, a minor is not punished, however, in the case of the rebellious son, if he steals and eats a tartimer of meat and a half log of wine, he is stoned to death.474Talmud Bavli, Sanhedrin 70a; Rashi to Deuteronomy 21:18 Our sages, of blessed memory, stated,475Talmud Bavli, Taanit 11a “The wicked are accustomed to eat meat and drink wine, saying,476Isaiah 56:12 ‘Come, I will fetch wine and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow will be like today etc.’” However, about this it is written,477Isaiah 22:14 – The prior verse states, “Yet behold! There is joy and gladness, slaying of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, eating meat and drinking wine, [saying,] ‘Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.’ “Until the day of your death you will not be atoned of this sin.” Eliyahu, who is remembered for good, said to Rabbi Yehudah,478Talmud Bavli, Brachot 29b “Do not get drunk and you will not sin.”
