There was still another year left for Babylonia: Thus is it found in Seder Olam: "In that night Belshazzar, the king [...], was slain. And Darius the Mede received the kingdom" (Daniel 5:30 - 6:1). Behold that is seventy years from the day that Nebuchadnezzar reigned; sixty-nine from the day that he conquered Yehoyakim; and still one more year 'for Babylonia,' for the completion of the seventy years from when he ruled over Israel - and Darius rose and completed it. And after him, in the next year, Cyrus reigned in Babylonia and they were partially remembered. As he said, "Anyone of you of all His people—may his God be with him, and let him go up, etc." (Ezra 1:2). We learned from this baraita that when Belshazzar died, there were only sixty-nine years from the conquest of Yehoyakim. But above we counted seventy years: Forty-five of Nebuchadnezzar, twenty-three of Evil-merodach and three of Belshazzar. Hence [some of them] were partial years.

the evening of my desire The night that I longed for, for rejoicing and for a banquet. In the Book of Josipon we find that he was happy since his troops had defeated the army of Persia. (Book 1, ch. 5) That night He made for me into trembling, as it is said (Dan. 5:1): “King Belshazzar made a great feast...They drank wine...(verse 4). On that very night, King Belshazzar was slain...(verse 30).” (6:1) “And Darius the Mede received the kingdom.”

They presented themselves as envoys. They made themselves look like messengers. The word יִצְטַיָרוּ messenger, is from, צִיר “וְצִיר בַּגוֹיִם שְׁלַח” (Ovadiah 1:1) [and a messenger was sent among the nations.] Every word whose root begins with a “צ” (צַדִי ), when used as a reflexive either in the form of מִתְפַּעֵל or נִתְפַּעֵל, is constructed with a “ט” (טֶית) in the middle and separates the root letters of the word,3Rashi thus explains why the letter “ט” was inserted in the word יִצְטַיָרוּ. like מַה נִצְטַדָק, (how can we justify ourselves).4See Bereishis 44:16. the root of נִצְטַדָק is צֶדֶק (justice) which he says as נִצְטַדָק. Similarly, וּמִטַל שְׁמַיָא גִשְׁמֵה יִצְטַבַע [His body was wet from the dew of Heaven)5Daniel 6:21. The root of יִצְטַבַע is צֶבַע.

eased My spirit They caused My anger to subside in Babylon when they destroyed Belshazzar and Nebuchadnezzar’s descendants. This is what Isaiah (48:14) said: “The Lord loves him who shall do His will in Babylon, etc.”

Behold I stir up Media against them Darius the Mede assassinated Belshazzar. So Scripture states (Dan. 5:30): “On that very night, Belshazzar...was slain”; (ibid. 6:1) “And Darius the Mede acquired the kingdom.”

the one who girds his loins This refers to Media and Persia, who girded their loins and assassinated Belshazzar and seized the kingdom of Babylon.

a perpetual sleep Heb. שנתעולם, a perpetual sleep, and so it happened to them; out of their wine feast and drunkenness they were destroyed and slain, and the city was captured, as it is written in Daniel (5:2): “Belshazzar said while he tasted the wine, etc.”; (5:4), “They drank wine, etc.”; (5: 30), “On that night, Belshazzar, the king of the Chaldeans, was slain”; (6:1), “And Darius the Mede received the kingship.”
