וַיְהִי֙ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם וּמֶ֖לֶךְ אֵ֣ין בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֣י ׀ אִ֣ישׁ לֵוִ֗י גָּ֚ר בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַר־אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַיִּֽקַּֽח־לוֹ֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה פִילֶ֔גֶשׁ מִבֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָֽה׃
Pada masa itu, ketika tidak ada raja di Israel, ada seorang Lewi yang tinggal sebagai pendatang di bagian terjauh pegunungan Efraim. Ia mengambil bagi dirinya seorang perempuan sebagai gundik dari Betlehem-Yehuda.
