Tosefta Why is "Noah Noah" (Gen. 6:9) written twice? Each and every righteous person in the world has two spirits. One stays in this world, while the other is in the World to Come. And so we find that the Holy One, blessed be He, named all the righteous twice: "Moses, Moses" (Ex. 3:4), "Jacob, Jacob" (Gen. 46:2), "Abraham, Abraham" (Gen. 22:11), "Samuel, Samuel" (I Shmuel 3:10) with the exception of Isaac. He is not named twice because when he approached the altar to be sacrificed, the soul that was within him in this world left him. And because it is said of Abraham, "blessed are You who resurrect the dead", so only the soul of the World to Come was returned to him. And that is why you shall find that the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, was not unified (on any righteous person in his lifetime). It was unified only on Isaac, because he was already considered as dead. He was like those who pass away from this world. The verse therefore states: "Behold, He puts no trust in His holy ones" (Iyov 15:15) because He does not unify His name on the righteous during their lifetimes.

For from the quarrelsome words of the immature grain, a thorn has spread among the brethren and rebellion like the sin of witchcraft (I Sam. 15:23). When the time comes she raises her wings on high (Job 39:18). God know the days of the perfect (Ps. 37:18) and the way of the righteous (Ps. 1:6), and raises up from the dust (Ps. 113:7) and the far distant sea (Ps. 65:6) all the souls of the house of Jacob (Gen. 46:27). They all eagerly desire to hear the word of God and the ancient records (I Chron. 4:22). However, [until] now they have not seen the clear light of [Him who dwells] in the skies. For from the top of the Rocks I see Him (Num. 23:9), and among those who turn the many to righteousness (Dan. 12:3) I behold Him. Grace is poured upon their lips (Ps. 45:3) like roses (Song 5:13). Their waters are more sure than the garden spring, a well of living waters (Song 4:15). Like doves [going] to their cotes (Isa. 60:8) they have drunk spices. They call to God, and He answers them (Ps. 99:6). This one says, I am the Lord’s (Isa. 44:5), answer me with broad spaces (Ps. 118:5), for my heart does not rest at night (Eccles. 2;23), nor does my spirit within me (Isa. 26:9). This one writes with his hand to the Lord (Isa. 44:5) from that which had preceded him [at] Sinai, and on the skins of kid goats (Gen. 27:16) they set up their signs (Ps. 74:4) which they wrote to instruct them for their generations, an eternal covenant (Exod. 31:16).

"In the sight of the sons of men" (Ps. 31:20). This is the lower Garden of Eden, where all the righteous stand in the spirit, which is clothed in a precious garment, in the same way and form that they appeared in this world. Thus, the phrase "in the sight of the sons of men" means in the same form as human beings that live in this world. And they stand there and then rise up in the air, ascending to the celestial Academy in the upper Garden of Eden. They float around and bathe in the dew of the rivers of pure balsam. Then they come down and dwell below.

The fifth precept is found in the verse, "Let the waters swarm abundantly with moving creatures that have life" (Genesis 1:20). This verse contains three precepts. The first is to study the Torah; the second is to beget children: and the third is to circumcise a male child on the eighth day of life and remove the foreskin. It is necessary to study the Torah with great effort at all times, in order to better one's spirit and soul.

And this the secret that they teach "Ad-nai Ad-nai" (Exodus 34) there is a pause between them. In every place that a name is called twice there is a pause between them, such as "Avraham, Avraham" (Gen. 22:11); "Yaakov, Yaakov" (Gen. 46:2); "Shmuel, Shmuel" (I Samuel 3:10). All have a pause between them, with the exception of "Moshe Moshe", which has no pause between them. What is the reason? "Avraham, Avraham" - the last is complete, the first not. At first he was not complete since now he became complete through ten tests, and therefore there is a pause between them, since now he was not as he was at the beginning.

[The men wanted to return to the land (Jonah 1:13) in teshuvah and "were not able because the sea" which is the decree of judgment "was growing more and more stormy around them"] At that moment, "Ad-nai appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah/Yonah/the dove" (Jonah 2:1) - This is the first exile, about which it is written "and Jonah went down to the bowels of the ship" (Jonah 1:5). And this is "I will go with you to Egypt" (Gen. 46:4), as we maintain "in every place that Israel was exiled the Shechinah was with them" (see Zohar 2:7a and Megillah 29a). In that time (of the first exile) it was said about them (Israel) "And a new king arose in Egypt" (Ex. 1:8) and this is Pharaoh, about whom it is written "Ad-nai appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah", since he wanted to erase Israel from the world, as it is written "every son that is born you will throw into the Nile" (Ex. 1:22), similarly "Ad-nai appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah" to kill him. It is not written "to swallow Jonah" but "to swallow ET Jonah" and the particle ET is there to include the Faithful Shepherd [Moshe] who would bring Torah in his hands, which is from ALEF to TAV, and all reincarnations were in his hands, and this is the great fish, about which it is written "the great serpent" (Ezekiel 29:3), which is the fish of Egypt and its partner is Dagah (Jonah 2:2) and "the bowels of the Dagah" are Egypt.
