And they who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and they who turn many to righteousness like the stars for ever and ever" (Daniel 12:3). "And they who are wise" alludes to the souls of the righteous, "the brightness of the firmament" to the illumination of the upper three Sefirot, which are revealed when combined with the attribute of mercy. The atmosphere of the brightness that is most concealed of all concealed things merged with this point and shone into it. Then this Beginning which is Arich Anpin expanded into a head and body, and made a chamber for its honor and glory. There, inside the chamber, Arich Anpin planted a holy seed to bring forth souls for the benefit of the world. This is the secret of, "So the holy seed is its immovable stump".

This is the advice necessary for the man whom the king wishes to honor (Esther 6:6). Peace of mind to the poor and lowly of spirit, who trembles at His word (Isa. 66:2). Let him not boast of the morrow (Prov. 27:1), “for the reward of [the performance of] a commandment is a commandment” (Avot 4:2). He desired it for his habitation (Ps. 132:13); until the day breathe (Song 2:17) man will go out to his labor (Ps. 104:23), [which] will be accepted for him (Lev. 1:4), his fruit in its time (Ps. 1:3). This tarrying in the house for a little (Ruth 2:7), for the command of the king was urgent (I Sam. 21:9). Prepare outside your sword and your bow (Gen. 27:3), and do all your labor (Exod. 20:9) in Scripture, Mishnah, and Gemara, and there will be stored for you in the field of apples4The “apple trees” symbolize the sefirot from Gedulah to Yesod. Malkhut is called the “Field of Apples” because she is filled with “apple trees.” a heap of good deeds. Afterwards you will build your house “as a meeting house for the sages” (Avot 1:4), numerous and perfect (Nah. 1:12), seated upon judgment seats (Judg. 5.10) in holiness, and receiving one from another in whispers, crowned with their tefillin and fringes which they make for themselves (Deut. 22:12) to wrap themselves with awe and fear. They seclude themselves like standing Seraphim (Isa. 6:2), like brethren sitting together (Ps. 133:1). And if, as God lives (I Sam. 20:3), they speak of the face of the eagle (Ezek. 1:10), they were swifter and stronger than lions (I Samuel 1:23), and the noise of the wings of the living creatures (Ezek. 3:13) says, Blessed be the glory of God (Ezek. 3:12), who loves righteousness (Ps. 11:7), and the words rejoice as when they were given at Sinai from before God, the Lord of all the earth (Josh. 3:13).

If the spirit which rules all fails and they prophesy, my words will be fulfilled on those who rise against me (Ps. 92:12). Is Saul also among the prophets? (I Sam. 10:11). This you will answer, And who is their father? (I Sam. 10:12). These things go after the intention of the heart. I, in my innocence (Ps. 26:1), plead before my judges: Let him judge all the words of this epistle leniently in its quantity and quality. If my soul does not speak from worry (Josh. 22:24), consider me as one who mentions and reminds the enlightened ones of my bountiful nation (Song 6:12). “Dear is man, who was created in [God’s] image” (Avot 3:15). Speaking as a righteous company (Ps. 58:2), He will judge righteousness. For my heart is not haughty (Ps. 131:1), all my senses are in me (Job 20:2), and my eyes are not haughty (Ps. 131:1) before the God of Sinai (Ps, 68:9). I have not walked in greatness or wonders (Ps. 131:1) with the King, the Lord of Hosts (Isa. 6:5). For the maidservant has seen7The reference is to the midrash which states that a maidservant at the parting of the Red Sea saw more than the prophet Ezekiel in his visions. Cf. Mekhilta, Shirta 3. and is more righteous than I (Gen. 38:26). I am lighter [in consequence] than she is (II Sam. 6:22). I am lower than the earth (Isa. 29:4). I speak in honor of our God, who dwells in Zion (Josh. 4:21). And He, being merciful, will forgive [my] sin (Ps. 78:38).

But when He had created the shape of supernal man, it was to him for a chariot, and on it he descended, to be known by the appellation YHVH, so as to be apprehended by his attributes and in each particular one, to be perceived. Hence it was he caused himself to be named El, Elohim, Shaddai, Zevaot and YHVH, of which each was a symbol among men of his several divine attributes, making manifest that the world is upheld by mercy and justice, in acordance with man’s deeds. If the radiance of the glory of the Holy One, be blessed, had not been shed over his entire crea- tion, how could even the wise have apprehended him? He would have continued to be unknowable, and the words could not be verily said, “The whole earth is full of His glory” [Isa. 6:3].

92. But if he repents, the potion of life THAT IS THE SHECHINAH descends upon him, MEANING MALCHUT, about which it is said, “and return, and be healed” (Yeshayah 6:10) of these kinds of illnesses, and revives from the death of poverty, as is said, “therefore turn, and live” (Yechezkel 18:32), because when Yisrael are poor they are called dead, and it is said of them, “turn yourselves” (Ibid. 30), and live. 93. And there is no poverty like the poverty of Torah, AS OUR SAGES OF BLESSED MEMORY SAID, ‘one is only poor in knowledge,’ because one who has no Torah is called dead. HE ASKS, what is his remedy that he may merit that world, MEANING THE WORLD TO COME, AND ANSWERS, Torah, BECAUSE MENDING THE COVENANT DEPENDS MOSTLY UPON THE STUDY OF TORAH. For it is said of the Torah, “She is a tree of life…” (Mishlei 3:18). And TORAH is a remedy for all illnesses, as you say, “It shall be health to your navel” (Ibid. 8).

Baal HaSulam's Preface to Zohar
For if His light had not spread over all created beings by its enclothing, as it were, in these holy sefirot, how could the created beings merit recognizing Him and how could the verse be fulfilled: “The whole earth is full of His glory”?60Isaiah 6:3. The author of the Sulam explains: The meaning is that the Zohar is thereby explaining the Divine desire to appear to the souls as though these changes in the sefirot are in Him. This is in order to give the souls the possibility of sufficient recognition and perception of Him, since then the verse “the whole earth is full of His glory” will be fulfilled, as we stated in section #33# above.

These are the twelve faces and twelve wings of the heavenly beasts, as it is written (Ezekiel 1:8) "Each of the four had the face of a lion on the right" - this is the white of the eye. "Each of the four had the face of an ox on the left" - this is the red of the eye. "Each of them had the face of an eagle" - this is the green of the eye. And it is written, "Each had four faces... and four wings." - this all comes to twenty-four. And these wings are the eyelids, which are referred to as (Exodus 32:15) "they were inscribed on one side (zeh) and the other side (zeh)." [So too,] about the heavenly beasts it is said (Isaiah 6:3) "One (zeh) would call to the other (zeh), Holy! Holy! Holy! The Lord of Hosts! His presence fills the earth." Certainly, they are called "zeh and zeh", just like the two sides of the tablets of Torah, inscribed on one side and the other. These are inscribed tablets of stone, and that stone is the Foundation Stone from which the earth is formed. And this is the pupil of the eye, of which it is written (Zechariah 3:9) "A single stone with seven eyes." These are the seven skins of the eye, of which it is said (Psalms 119:164) "I praise you seven times a day." And this is the Holy Regency, as it is written, (Psalms 118:22) "The stone that the builders rejected will be the chief cornerstone." Who are these 'builders'? They are they masters of the Mishnah who built structures in the world, and the deciders of law (Halachah) who rejected Her in exile. [Therefore,] it is written of Her, "will be the chief cornerstone. For she is Moses' Halachah from Sinai, received by Moses. Although Her pupil was black, through it and from it will the Holy One light up the world, for He will illuminate Her.
