Siddur Ashkenaz

And He, the merciful One, will atone iniquity, and will not destroy, He frequently withdraws His anger, and does not arouse all His rage.1Psalms 78:38. You, Adonoy, do not withhold Your mercy from us; may Your kindness and truth always protect us.2Psalms 40:12 (basis). Deliver us, Adonoy, our God, and gather us from among the nations to give thanks to Your holy Name to be extolled in Your praise.3Psalms 106:47. If You, God, should preserve iniquities,4Were it not for the grace of God, any sin a person committed would deprive him of the right to continued existence. (Transgression is seen as a form of treason which is punishable by death). However, through the grace of Divine forgiveness, God makes it possible for us to atone for past sins through penitence and the decision to act in the future with God-fearing conduct.—S.R. Hirsch my Master, who could survive?5Psalms 130:3. But with You there is forgiveness, [in order] that You may be feared.6Psalms 130:4. Do not deal with us according to our sins nor repay us according to our iniquities.7Psalms 103:10 (basis). If our iniquities testify against us, Adonoy, act [mercifully] for Your Name’s sake.8Jeremiah 14:7. Remember Your mercies Adonoy, and Your kindnesses, for they are from the beginning of the world.9Psalms 25:6. Adonoy will answer us on the day of distress, the Name of the God of Jacob will fortify us.10Psalms 20:2 (basis). Because of the trials and tribulations that marked his life, Jacob has become the model personality for the people descended from him. We preserve our trust in God, despite all the bitter blows which befall us, even as Jacob was confident that God was mindful of him. We, too, are sustained by our trust that God will eventually lead us to salvation as He led Jacob to a pinnacle of joy and happiness.—S.R. Hirsch Adonoy, deliver [us]; the King will answer us on the day we call.11Psalms 20:10. Our Father, our King, favor us and answer us, for we have no [good] deeds; deal charitably with us for the sake of Your Name. Our Master, our God, heed our supplications; and remember unto us the covenant of our fathers and deliver us for Your Name’s sake. And now, my Master, our God, who brought out Your people, from the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made for Yourself a name to this day;’12A name which has come to be recognized to an ever growing extent among men.—S.R. Hirsch we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. My Master, with all Your righteousness turn away Your anger and Your rage from Your city, Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers,13Through sincere atonement and earnest resolve to better our conduct, we could have restored that which was lost through the iniquities of our ancestors. But instead, we, too, have left much to be desired in this respect.—Yaavetz Jerusalem and Your people are [held] in contempt by all who surround us. And now, listen our God, to the prayers of Your servant and to his supplications; and let Your radiant countenance shine upon Your desolate Sanctuary for Your sake, my Master.

And He, the Merciful One, atones iniquity and does not destroy; He frequently withdraws His anger and does not arouse all His rage. You, Adonoy, withhold not Your mercy from me; may Your kindness and Your truth18חסד (kindness) is the good God bestows without a promise, whereas אמת (truth) is the fulfillment of His promise.—Siach Yitzchok always protect me. Remember Your mercies Adonoy and kindnesses, for they are from the beginning of the world.19God’s mercies to mankind started from the very day that Adam was created. God created the world in order to fill it with kindness as it is said: “A world of kindness was built” (Psalms 89:3).—Rashi Give might to God,20Attribute your victories to God’s might rather than to your own.—Siach Yitzchok. Rashbam and others hold that since God’s actions are a reflection of Israel’s deeds, the latter are, in a sense, the source of His might. Thus when Israel follows the wishes of God, they give might to Him. His pride (majesty) hovers over Israel, and His might is in the clouds. You are awesome, God, from Your Sanctuaries,21There is a spiritual Temple in the heavens which corresponds to the Temple on earth.—Radak. The Talmud (Maseches Zevachim 115b) notes that the word ממקדשיך may also be read ממקדשיך, from Your holy people, indicating that God is especially demanding of the most adherent to the Torah. When this occurs, the world is filled with awe and fear of God. Almighty of Israel—He grants might and power to the people; blessed is God. Almighty of vengeance, Adonoy, Almighty of vengeance, reveal Yourself.22These two verses (94:1-2) are an appeal to God during a time fraught with the sufferings of exile, when it seems as if God has forsaken His people. He is urged to reveal Himself as the Mighty champion of justice—S.R. Hirsch Arise, Judge of the earth! Repay the arrogant their just reward. Deliverance is Adonoy’s.23Only God knows what is true deliverance for a person. Prayer is not always answered, because God in His infinite wisdom knows that granting the request is not always for our benefit. We must therefore bless and offer thanks to God regardless of whether our petition has been granted.—Siach Yitzchok Upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah. Adonoy of Hosts is with us, a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah. Adonoy of Hosts! Fortunate is the man who trusts in You. Adonoy, deliver [us]. The King will answer us on the day we call.

[A Psalm] by David – To You L·rd do I lift my soul. My G·d I have faith in You – Don't let me be embarrassed or let my enemies exult. Also all who have faith – let them not be embarrassed, let the enemies be embarrassed for naught. Let me understand me your ways L·rd and teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach [it to] me – for You are the G·d of my salvation – in You I have faith all day. Remember Your mercy – L·rd – and Your kindness – for they are eternal. The sins of my youth and transgressions do not recall because of your kindness You remember me because of Your goodness. Good & justare You L·rd – therefor You show sinners the [proper] path. You guide the humble with justice and You teach the humble his way. All the paths of the L·rd are kindness & truth to those faithful to His covenant & testimonies. For the sake of Your name L·rd – forgive my transgressions – for they are many. Who is this man that fears the L·rd – You lead him on the select path. His soul depends on good and his seed will inherit the land. The foundation of the L·rd is for those who fear Him and His covenant is for those that accept them. My eyes are constantly towards the L·rd – for he brings me out of the net on my feet. Turn to me and have grace upon me for I am unique and needy [person]. The sufferings of my heart have widened – from their pains You took me out. Observe my poverty and effort & remove all my sins. Observe my enemies, for they have increased. And with a violent hate did they despise me. Guard my soul and save me don't make me embarrassed for I place my trust in You. Simple and just You formed me – thus I put my trust in You. Redeem G·d Yisrael from all who cause them pain. And He will redeem Yisrael from all its sins

May it be Your will in front of You, Lord God, and God of our fathers, Father of mercy - that in the merit of the first circle that we have encircled the platform on Your Simchat Torah, that hints to kindness (chesed), that Your kindness will be upon us; and merit us to serve You in awe and in love. And may Your love always be stuck into our hearts, all the days of our lives; and that Your awe be upon our faces, such that we not sin. And for each and every trait that you give us, we thank You very very much. And give us the merit to understand, to do good and to do acts of kindness with all of our ability - with our bodies and with our money - with a full heart. And may all of our deeds be for Your sake and for Your mention with great desire. And give us the merit to distance ourselves from jealousy, cruelty and anger; and to acquire the trait of kindness with a complete acquisition - and for the sake of Your holy Torah that is given with [Your] right arm. And for the sake of Abraham, the man of kindness, fulfill the requests of our hearts for the good. Make Your goodness and kindness to us known in the eyes of all. (The next three verses begin with the Hebrew letters that spell out the word, kindness - CheSeD:) I will always sing [about] the kindnesses of God; with my mouth, I will make known Your faithfulness from generation to generation (Psalms 89:2). You are my Protector and my Shield; I have hoped for Your word (Psalms 119:114). Lord, guide me in Your ways, teach me Your paths (Psalms 25:4). May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in front of You, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Selichot Edot HaMizrach

Of David. Lord, I set my hope on You; my God, in You I trust; may I not be disappointed, may my enemies not exult over me. Let none who look to You be disappointed; let the faithless be disappointed, empty-handed. Let me know Your paths, Lord; teach me Your ways; guide me in Your true way and teach me, for You are God, my deliverer; it is You I look to at all times. Lord, be mindful of Your compassion and Your faithfulness; they are old as time. Be not mindful of my youthful sins and transgressions; in keeping with Your faithfulness consider what is in my favor, as befits Your goodness, Lord. Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He shows sinners the way. He guides the lowly in the right path, and teaches the lowly His way. All the Lord’s paths are steadfast love for those who keep the decrees of His covenant. As befits Your name, Lord, pardon my iniquity though it be great. Whoever fears the Lord, he shall be shown what path to choose. He shall live a happy life, and his children shall inherit the land. The counsel of the Lord is for those who fear Him; to them He makes known His covenant. My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for He will loosen my feet from the net. Turn to me, have mercy on me, for I am alone and afflicted. My deep distress increases; deliver me from my straits. Look at my affliction and suffering, and forgive all my sins. See how numerous my enemies are, and how unjustly they hate me! Protect me and save me; let me not be disappointed, for I have sought refuge in You. May integrity and uprightness watch over me, for I look to You. God, redeem Israel from all its distress.

Our Father, our King, you are our Father. Our Father, our King, we have no King besides You. Our Father, our King, grace us and answer us, as we have no [good] deeds. Do charity and kindness with us for the sake of Your great name, and save us. And we do not know what we shall do, but our eyes are upon You. Remember Lord, Your kindnesses, for they are from forever. Let Your kindness, Lord, be upon us, as we have supplicated from You. Do not remember former iniquities against us – quickly let Your mercy precede us, for we are greatly impoverished. Help us in the name of the Lord, the Maker of the heavens and the earth. Grace us, Lord, Grace us, for we have been sated with much disgrace. In wrath, recall mercy. In wrath, recall the binding [of Isaac]. In wrath, recall innocence. In wrath, recall love. Lord save – the King that answers on the day we call. For You knew our inclinations – remember that we are dust. Help us – God of our salvation – for the sake of Your Name's honor. And save us and atone for our sins for the sake of Your Name.
