I am awestruck as I begin to voice my prayer; as I rise to plead before the presence of Him Who is awesome and terrifying. I am deficient in [good] deeds, therefore I am in fear; wisdom I lack, how can I hope? My Creator! give me understanding— Your inheritance [Torah] to possess; strengthen me, and give me courage, from weakness and fear. Accept my prayer as the incense offering2The words כְּמַנְטִיף וּמַשְׁחִיל refer to two ingredients which are part of the קְטֹרֶת, incense offering, as stated in Shemos 30:34, נָטָף וּשְׁחֵלֶת, stacte and onycha. let my speech be as sweet as the honey-comb. Accept me as upright; and not as a hypocrite; [In behalf] of those who sent me— grant atonement and forgiveness. May my calling be sweet— not like the roar of a lion;3See Tehillim 91:13, עַל שַׁחַל וָפֶתֶן תִּדְרֹךְ, “You will tread upon lion and snake.” The word כְּמַשְׁחִיל in the Piyyut refers to שַׁחַל, lion. be receptive to those who approach You, crawling humble and lowly as a catepillar. Gracious One! as You promised the one [Moshe] in the cave—4See Shemos 33:22. listen to my cry as I begin my prayer. My insides are scorched as You search my foolish deeds; and from the dread of judgment, my soul is loathsome.5See Zecharyah 11:8. Should You repay my sin in full, my heart trembles; the fountains of my eyelids flow as streams. I yearn for Your righteousness and I hope; the righteousness of my fathers, remember, cause them to pray [in our behalf]. My heart grows hot when I pray— It is like a fiery coal;6The word יַגְחִיל is taken from the word גַחֶלֶת, coal. My soul is aroused as I begin to pray.

When you lie down, do not fear & let your sleep be pleasant. Guard me as the pupil of You eye, in the shadow of Your wings guard me. And I will place my name on the Children of Israel & I will bless them. I lied down & I will sleep, awaken me for G·d, I rely upon You. In Your Hands I deposit my Soul. Redeem me, L·rd, G·d of Truth.
He who sits in the shelter of the Supreme One, in the Shadow of the L·rd will he dwell. I say to the L·rd "You are my refuge & my fortress my L·rd, I will trust in Him" For He will save you from the ensnared trap from destructive pestilence. With his pinion will he cover you, & under His wings you will be protected. Shield & Armor are His truth. You shall not fear from terror of night, [nor] from the arrow that flies by day. From pestilence that walks in the dark, from a destroyer that damages? in the noon. A thousand will encamp at your [left] side & ten-thousand by your right & to you they will not come near. Only with your eyes you shall peer, & the retribution of the wicked you shall see. Because [you said] "You, L·rd are my refuge" you made the Supreme G·d your abode. No evil shall befall you & a plague will not arrive to your tent. For His angels He will command for you, to protect you in all your ways. On palms they will carry you, lest you stub your foot on a stone. Upon a lion & a serpent you shall tread, you will trample a young lion & a snake. Because he desired My Name - I will protect him & I will lift him - for he knows My Name. He will call Me & I will answer him - I am with him in distress & I will release him & Honor him I will satiate him with longevity of days & I will demonstrate to him My salvation. May it be Your will in front of You, Lord God, and God of our fathers, Father of mercy - that in the merit of the second circle that we have encircled the platform on Your Simchat Torah, that hints to might, that You will give us the merit to overcome our impulse; and give us the strength to suppress our physical desires. And for the sake of Isaac who was girded by might (gevurah), arouse Your might and come to our salvation. And in the way that our father, Abraham, suppressed his mercy to do Your will with a full heart; so too, let Your mercy suppress Your anger - and let Your mercy roll over Your traits. And may You act towards us, Lord our God, with the trait of kindness and bring us in beyond the letter of law. And with Your great kindness, turn away Your fierce anger from Your people, from Your city, from Your land and from Your inheritance; annul all of the harsh and bad decrees from upon us; and decree good decrees upon us, according to Your great mercy. (The next five verses begin with the Hebrew letters that spell out the word, might - GeVURaH:) Also from willful sins keep Your servant; let them not dominate me; then shall I be blameless (Psalms 19:14). He will cover you with His pinions; you will find refuge under His wings; His fidelity is an encircling shield (Psalms 91:4). And we are Your people and the flock that You tend; we shall glorify You forever; for all time we shall tell Your praises (Psalms 79:13). Give ear, O shepherd of Israel who leads Joseph like a flock; appear, You who are enthroned on the cherubim (Psalms 80:2). Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; let my heart be undivided in reverence for Your name (Psalms 86:11). May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in front of You, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
