E ordinate loro: “Prendetevi di qui, dal mezzo del Giordano, dal luogo dove stettero saldi i piedi dei sacerdoti, dodici pietre; portatele con voi e deponetele nel luogo dove vi accamperete questa notte”.»

Tosefta Sotah

Come and see how many miracles were performed for Israel on the same day: They crossed over the waters of the Jordan. And they came to Mount Gerizim and to Mount Ebal, which are in Samaria, which is in the vicinity of Shechem, which is by the terebinth of Moreh, as it is said (Deut. 11:30), "Are they not across the Jordan, along the path of the setting sun...?" [That is] more than sixty mil, and not a single man could stand before them. And anyone who [tried to] stand before them was immediately struck with diarrhea, as it is said (Ex. 23:27), "I will send my terror before you, and will discomfit all the people that you encounter, etc." And it says (Ex. 15:16), "Terror and fear will fall upon them, etc., until your people have passed through" -- that is the first coming. "Until the people who you have acquired have passed through" (ibid.) -- that is the second coming. It may be said that from that point forward, the Israelites were worthy of miracles being performed for them, just in the way it was performed on the sea [of reeds]; however, they sinned. And afterwards they brought the stones and built the Altar, and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings upon it, and they sat and ate and drank, and they carried the stones and came and slept in their place, as it is said (Josh 4:3), "And carry them across with you, and lay them down in the lodging place." You might say that this refers to any lodging place, thus the verse states (ibid.), "in the lodging-place in which you spend the night." And it is said (Josh. 4:20), "and those twelve stones [that they took from the Jordan, Joshua erected in Gilgal]." Thus, you learn that in Gilgal they were erected.
