Rabban Simeon b. Gamaliel said: Great is peace, for we find that the tribes⁵³i.e. the sons of Jacob. reported an untrue statement in order to maintain peace between Joseph and his brethren; as it is stated, And they sent a message unto Joseph, saying: Thy father did command before he died, saying: So shall ye say unto Joseph: Forgive, I pray thee now, the transgression of thy brethren and their sin,⁵⁴ibid.
